i can't see me loving nobody but you

I watched "Imagine Me & You" last night because [livejournal.com profile] dollsome told me to, and OH MY GOOOOOD. The story is just so enchanting and cleverly written, and though it does drift off into the land of slight cheesiness near the end, it is just so, SO, superb (and "Happy Together" - ONE OF MY FAVORITEST SONGS IN THE UNIVERSE - is the montage song at the end!).

And the acting, Jesus Christ. The cast is fantastic and while some parts make you feel like you are about to explode with GLEE, some parts hurt so much it's like they yanked your heart out of your chest and put it through a paper shredder. All the characters are so much fun and so realistic; from the main couple, Rachel and Luce (Luce is played by the incredible Lena Headey, and let me say, it is SO STRANGE to see her play a character who isn't constantly being kickass and shooting people in the face, at first, but she pulls it off INCREDIBLY), to H, Rachel's precocious and adorable little sister, to Hec, Rachel's husband (played by the amazing and drool-worthy Matthew Goode!) - which is especially lovely, since usually the antagonist in romantic comedies is a total caricature, and not sympathetic AT ALL. Everyone has wonderful chemistry, the relationships are well-formed and believable, and it's such a legitimately good movie. Also, who should show up at the end but ANGEL COULBY? Acting wonderfully Gwen-like and generally being adorable!

In addition, it is SO BEAUTIFUL. Like, full on "Notes On A Scandal" beautiful. So beautiful, that I felt the urge to picspam, and what was supposed to be a maybe 40 cap affair turned into 100+ caps. Er, oops?

Also, a few notes for when you read it:

1. The first chapter tends to put people off, including me the first time, because it's slow going. KEEP READING ANYWAY. Once you start getting to the flashbacks (which start in Chapter 2, I believe) it's all worth it.

2. The text bits in the middle also occasionally put people off, because after reading comic-format, it's easy to see prose and go OMG TOO MANY WORDS. It's okay to skip those bits if you need to, in order to keep reading, but I recommend that you at least go back and read them at the end, because they make the experience so much richer. ♥

3. Um. APPRECIATE THE AWESOME? Because it is so very awesome. <3

Annnnyway. I am going to finish downloading this movie, then downloading Brideshead, then PAINFULLY RESIST WATCHING EITHER/BOTH while I write this stupid essay. XD

Right? I just stare at the six userpics in my little 'Browse' box and feel STUPIDLY ANNOYED. Annoyed at what??? The world will never know.

[identity profile] dollsome.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, you know what would be amazing?! If there was a way to, like, shuffle your userpics, so they wouldn't all be in the same order as you uploaded them all the time on the userpics page! That way, I would get sick of them so much less easily.

Livejournal, get on that STAT.

ahaha you totally should. I mean, when you first hear that it's a graphic novel you don't think so much of it. But I've actually become really interested in comic books because of it.

You don't realize it, but they can tell stories really wonderfully in ways that novels can't.

BESIDES Watchmen is epic on so many levels. The characters and the techniques AND EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS. LIKE THE ENDING WHICH IS ALL "asjdlfkjkf HOLY SHIT did that really just happen?! That was so brilliant I can't even explain it."

I'm such a Watchmen fan after reading the book. It's totally worth the money too. I lent mine out to a friend and I had withdrawal because I couldn't go back and re-read certain parts.

The thing that amazes me about it is that there're all of these historical/cultural tie ins. Like the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. And then Nixon era feelings. I mean there are heroes, but only one of them is really 'super' and the way that its worked in to the culture is just BRILLIANT. And the moral ambiguity of them is really intricate.

read it PLEASE. It makes me exceptionally happy.

That would be fantastic! AND UNBELIEVABLY FUN. Kind-of-relatedly, I've always wanted some sort of 'keyword bundle' feature for userpics. Like, you could sort them all under a mood, or a fandom, or a COLOR-SCHEME. I know that's what 'keywords' are supposed to be for, but dammit, not being able to have the same keyword for stuff is SERIOUSLY LIMITING. Though I suppose you could always add them like, mood } happy } 01, but...WHATEVER. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING.

[identity profile] lovestories.livejournal.com 2009-01-25 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I ADORE graphic novels. Well, Japanese graphic novels, anyway (MANGAAAA!). I'm not all that fond of comics, or the American style of illustrating, which is what puts me off most American graphic novels, and Watchmen itself.

BUY ANYWAYS. I shall be reading it soon!

[identity profile] aestheticized.livejournal.com 2009-01-26 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Butting in to say, YES, I feel you in regard to American art. And that's something I'm still overcoming, but when it comes to storytelling, Watchmen PWNS. Art-wise . . . it's not pretty like manga is, or even like some of the modern comics are -- Young Avengers, anyone? -- but the art didn't turn me completely off. It was at least well thought out and utilized wonderfully, if not beautifully. And the upcoming movie will add all the pretty I need.

Lovely spam of a lovely movie. My heart really broke for Matthew Goode's character though, even if the romantic in me loves the happy ending for the ladies!

Check out my friend's site at www.imaginemeandyouthemovie.com - it's got everything you need to know about the film.
